About

Inês Sequeira is a Group Leader / Associate Professor at the Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London.

She has been studying stem cell and cancer biology for the past 18 years and is fascinated by how cells interact with each other, to deliver instructions, to collaborate, migrate, compete or synchronize their actions. Her main research focus is to understand the regulation of stem cells to regenerate the skin and hair follicle. She also became interested in cancer, where developmental programs are severely compromised: how stem cells deregulate to develop tumours, particularly studying the signalling pathways at the onset of the stem cell progression to cancer, as well as the tumour heterogeneity.

Her interests encompass cross-discipline research, collaborating with bioinformaticians and mathematicians to develop tools for image analysis and modelisation of stem cell behaviour and tumour heterogeneity.

Inês is also engaged in several science outreach activities and has developed projects between art and science: she collaborated with architects and artists to create a Stem Cell Hotel for an art exhibition at the Somerset House in London, she created a podcast about the actualities of stem cell research (StemCells@Lunch digested), and organises student visits to the laboratory and visits schools with Native Scientist. Recently she has also collaborated with London Science Gallery and school teachers to develop Art&Science projects.
