Being a scientist is not only discovering new things but also letting the public know the importance of these discoveries. The most rewarding aspect of being a scientist is being able to communicate the wonders of science research and inspire young creative minds to the magic and fun on Science!
Native Explorers
Outreach without borders
Together with Native Scientist, an award-winning non-profit organisation that promotes diversity in STEM and tackles educational disadvantage by bringing together scientists and pupils who speak a common heritage language, we organized a series of outreach events called Native Explorers.
Native Explorers is designed to help universities and research centres engage with local communities and encourage pupils to have a positive attitude towards science and multilingualism.
During the event, pupils put on the scientist gown and discovered the world of skin regeneration, embryo development and DNA.
‘These hands-on workshops are an extremely valuable experience that engages and inspires students in the wonders of science. As scientists, we have the responsibility to communicate our science with the public and for me doing it my mother tongue is at the same time a challenge and a pleasure’.
The event is the result of a partnership between Native Scientist and the Centre for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine, Instituto Camões (Portuguese homolog of the British Council) and Oval Learning Cluster (network of schools located in the Oval area).
Scientist for a Day
Can children ever be too young to be inspired to be scientists of the future?
I regularly organise lab visits for children. They spend a day in the lab with scientists and BEING scientist for a day! Children form London primary schools are invited to enter the real Stem Cell Hotel labs to interact with real cells.
PODCAST: Stem Cells @Lunch Digested
Stem Cells @Lunch digested is a podcast series aiming to bring you weekly the breath of research that is happening at the Centre for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine! With these podcast episodes we want to reach out to students interested in pursuing a career in Science/STEM subjects and the general public who is interested in knowing a bit more about our work.
We look forward digesting stem cells for and with you!
A Esperança para lá das Expectativas:
História das células estaminais desde a sua descoberta até à terapia
Portuguese translation of the comic book Hope Beyond Hype produced by OptiStem and EuroStemCell.
The story provides a realistic and accurate introduction to the complex process of developing stem cell-based treatments, in an interesting and engaging way. It is important to engage people with our work and we hope this graphic story will be useful for public events, new patients and carers, patient advocacy groups, educationalists, public engagement practitioners and researchers.
Bringing Scientists to Schools
What can be more inspiring than learning Science from a Scientist?
Teachers and Scientists work together to engage children into Science! I visit schools to talk about our research, discuss the current challenges in science and share our excitement about scientific discovery. The visits usual generate a wonderful scientific buzz across the school as children embark on a day of investigations.
